Booker Fires Up NJ Delegation

"Newark Mayor Cory Booker, an inspirational speaker, fired up the state delegation Monday morning with a New Jersey-pride speech that was laced with humor. He talked about American history, inventions and firsts-in-the-nation.

"Not only do I think the state's politicians can drink any other state's politicians under the table, but the nation's first brewery was built in New Jersey, in Hoboken," he said to cheers and laughter. He also said that the country's first drive-in movie theater opened in Camden.

"I know (Virginia) may be for lovers. But New Jersey had the first drive-in. And I know hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans were conceived in the back seats of Chevys and Fords."

Live From Denver!

Dear Democrats,

Our staffers have hit the ground running, our delegates are arriving, Denver is buzzing with pre-convention excitement, and the NJ Democratic State Committee is working around the clock to bring all the action of this historic convention directly to YOU.

For the first time, we will be broadcasting the action – as it happens – live on our Web site, www.njdems.org.

You can tune in all week to catch commentary from our New Jersey delegates, speeches from Garden State elected officials, and special guest appearances by exciting national political figures. To kick things off, state Senator Joe Vitale will be sponsoring a daily Webcast of the morning delegate meeting, every day the week of the convention from 10 a.m. to Noon.

In addition to the Web content we’ll be providing you at www.njdems.org, there’s a host of other convention events about which we’re excited. The convention’s theme of unity, hope, and change will showcase national Democrats’ focus on bringing our party – and our nation – together under one, unified banner.

Monday, August 25th’s theme is One Nation.
The headline prime-time speaker will be Michelle Obama.

Other featured speakers scheduled Monday include:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; Senator Claire McCaskill; Maya Soetoro-Ng and Craig Robinson; A Tribute to Senator Edward Kennedy; and
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, which includes a video segment introducing delegates and other convention attendees to the natural beauty and strong voices of leadership in the mountainous west.

Tuesday, August 26th’s theme is Renewing America’s Promise.
The headline prime-time speaker will be Senator Hillary Clinton.

The keynote address will be delivered by Mark Warner, the former Governor of Virginia. Other featured speakers scheduled Tuesday include:
Governors Napolitano, Patrick, Rendell, Schweitzer, Sebelius, and Strickland; Senator Bob Casey, Jr.; and Federico Peña.

Wednesday, August 27th’s theme is Securing America’s Future.
The headline prime-time speaker will be Vice Presidential Nominee Senator Joe Biden.

Other featured speakers scheduled Wednesday include:
Former President Bill Clinton; Governor Bill Richardson; Senators Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, Jay Rockerfeller, and Ken Salazar; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid; House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn; Representative Patrick Murphy (D-PA); and Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth.

Thursday, August 28th’s theme is Change You Can Believe In.
On Thursday night, the DNCC will throw open the doors of the convention and move to INVESCO Field at Mile High so that more Americans can be part of the fourth night of the convention as Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for President.

This year’s convention also will showcase some unique elements. The first three nights of convention week will feature America’s Town Hall: An Interactive Dialogue. Elected leaders, national policy experts and other convention speakers will respond directly to voters LIVE from the convention floor on topics including: how to change politics as usual; fixing our economy; making America safer; and restoring our nation’s standing in the world.

Elected leaders and policy experts also will answer questions online all week at www.demconvention.com. Text and video questions can be submitted online at www.demconvention.com/townhall through Wednesday, August 27. Americans in eight cities across the country also had the opportunity to record their questions and individual stories in person at a series of “open calls” that will run this week.

And during convention week, there’s only one place to get the inside scoop on convention activities and a behind-the-scenes perspective on Democracy in action – ONLINE. Rising political stars and campaign officials will host “Countdown to America’s Future,” a series of daily Webcasts, which will be broadcast on www.demconvention.com, on Comcast Cable’s video on demand service, and via satellite service.

The 15-minute long segments will air daily 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time (MT)/4:30 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) beginning Sunday, August 24 through Thursday, August 28. A final show will air 7:00 a.m. MT/9:00 a.m. ET on Friday, August 29, and will include highlights from Obama’s nomination acceptance speech at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

This year’s convention will truly be an opportunity to bring about change for the nation. We look forward to sharing the week with you and look forward to working with you through November.

Go Democrats!!!

McCain + Bush = Job Losses

With seven straight months of job losses in 2008, and unemployment last month reaching its highest point in more than four years, why would anyone offer more of the same failed Bush policies? But that’s exactly what John McCain—who voted with President Bush 95 percent of the time in 2007—wants to do.

McCain’s even put the interests of his lobbyist pals ahead of American jobs. He and his campaign manager Rick Davis had a role in a DHL deal that may cost 8,000 jobs in Ohio. McCain used his position in the Senate to hold up the deal while Davis actively lobbied members of Congress to support the deal.

To read more about how McCain supports deals that harm American workers and more on the impact of failed Bush-McCain economic policies on American jobs, go to the "100 Days, 100 Ways" web site.

For more on McCain's record on jobs visit the "Jobs First?" article at McCainpedia.org.

Save the Jersey Shore

Last month, John McCain came to New Jersey to talk about how much he loves the environment. But now he wants to put the natural beauty of our Jersey Shore at risk, all for a few barrels of oil. McCain has caved-in to Big Oil and endorsed President Bush’s plan to open up the Jersey shore to oil drilling. In New Jersey Democrats, Republicans and Independents all agree on the need to protect the pristine natural condition of the Jersey Shore.

Join us in sending John McCain and George Bush an E-Postcard from the Jersey Shore to tell them to keep their Big Oil buddies off our shoreline.

New Democrats

Great news! We’re just now getting some hard numbers back illustrating how many new Democrats we have in New Jersey and they’re turning out better than we thought!

According to our latest numbers, we’ve added over half a million newly declared Democrats! Our registration advantage went from about 240,000 (roughly 1.07 million Democrats to 830,000 Republicans) to 600,000 (roughly 1.6 million Democrats to 1 million Republicans).

These are amazing numbers that show we are the party of change and people are sick and tired of the GOP and won’t allow a third Bush term under John McCain. Now, only two of our thirteen Congressional Districts have more registered Republicans than Democrats. Before these updated numbers, all 6 Republican held districts had an advantage. Those two remaining districts won’t hold that advantage for long if we keep working hard.

McCainpedia

The DNC has launched McCainpedia, the latest online tools designed to provide greater access to information and resources. Today’s highlighted issue is an important one for New Jersey, the uninsured. George Bush and John McCain have consistently fought against crucial SCHIP legislation and in so doing have put healthcare at risk for tens of thousands of New Jersey children.

New Jersey Will Move Into The Forefront With Family Leave Insurance

'A true victory for families that builds on our legacy of workers' rights and makes New Jersey a leader on Family Leave Insurance. Earning a living and caring for a family member should not be mutually exclusive.' -Governor Jon S. Corzine

When Governor Jon S. Corzine follows through on his commitment to Family Leave Insurance by enacting a law that supports employees in caring for the critical needs of family members he will - once again - advance New Jersey into the forefront on a key national issue. California and Washington State are the only other states to adopt family leave.

This is an issue and an accomplishment with a clear partisan contrast. It took the leadership of Governor Corzine, Senate President Codey, Assembly Speaker Roberts, Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman and other Democrats to overcome a decade of entrenched resistance to the ability to care for critically ill family members or to meet other family emergencies.

"The Republican Party wants people to think it is the 'family values' party, but it's the Democrats who have succeeded with policies that actually 'value the needs of families'. Some have labeled New Jersey's policy leadership 'progressive,' but I would simply say we are 'making progress' on issues of importance to working families." Democratic Party Leader Joe Cryan

Let's say No to a third Bush term

The John McCain of 2008 is a far cry from the maverick challenger of 2000. After losing to George W. Bush and his cronies in the Republican Presidential Primary in 2000, John McCain decided ‘If you can’t beat ‘e…join ‘em’. He has spent the past 8 years cozying up to right wing ideologues who have taken this country in the wrong direction. Whether it be changing his stance on Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, disregarding the spirit of his own McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill or now kissing the rings of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell who he called ‘agents of intolerance' in 2000.

You can see many of these conversions yourself at a website with the first debates of the 2008 Presidential Election. The catch is that it is McCain debating himself.

Poor Republicans, they can’t find any quality candidates who want to run for US Senate. Their latest candidate, DC Lawyer/Lobbyist Dick Zimmer already lost a race for US Senate and four years later lost a congressional race. It is just more proof that everyone knows this state and country are committed to ending the Bush Republicans’ reign in Washington once and for all.

Bad News Bush Comes To New Jersey

Bad News Bush & The Bad News Economy

The bad news on the economy just keeps on coming and today the man to blame is coming to New Jersey. Almost every economic fact of life is going bad and economists say the recession will likely get worse. George Bush, the Republicans in Congress and the Republican agenda couldn't have done more harm to the economy and to the economic well being of mainstream Americans if they tried.

In seven long years the country's huge surplus has been turned into an even larger debt;

A growing economy has fallen into a deepening recession;

The Gross Domestic Product for the last quarter was an anemic 0.6 percent;

Tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of working people;

Bailouts for Wall Street while the mortgage crisis ravages homeowners;

Gas prices reach an all time high ($3.26) while Big Oil reaps huge profits;

Health care costs grow beyond the reach of more Americans;

The cost of the war in Iraq will be $3 trillion.

Etc., etc., etc...

George Bush and the Republicans couldn't have done more harm if they tried.

George Bush At A Debt Counseling Agency?!

Now George Bush is coming to visit a debt-counseling agency?! That's like bringing Dr. Kevorkian in to work as an emergency room doctor.

Where Are NJ Republicans? Will They Stand With & Speak For The People? Or, Will They Run & Hide?

Undoubtedly, the New Jersey Republican Congressional incumbents who were part of the Bush agenda will have "scheduling conflicts" today and won't join with the President.

It's not good enough to dodge Bush photo-ops. It's not good enough to allow partisan political loyalties to muffle their voices. Just trying to "run out the clock" on the Bush Administration will do nothing productive. Turning their backs in silence on Bush, failing to challenge him, is essentially the same as turning their backs in silence on working people.

The Best Way To Bring The Bush Era To An End - Elect Democrats

The President's visit is a poignant reminder that the best way to bring the Bush era to an end and the best way to restore economic health, economic opportunity and economic fairness is to elect as many Democrats to as many offices as possible.

We're going to need them all to undo the damage Bush and the Republicans done.

Denver 2008

Dems = Middle Class Economic Relief / GOP = 4 More Years of Bush Recession

The Drum Major Institute, a leading Middle Class Economic Policy Think Tank issued report cards recently on members of Congress. The entire New Jersey Democratic Congressional delegation gets top grades (straight As) on the issues of importance to the middle class.

The legislation used to grade them: ten pieces of legislation in the House and ten in the Senate.

The active support of Democrats who are working and fighting for the American middle class is especially important now that we are bringing an end to the Bush era. George Bush and the Republicans who support his policies - including John McCain and the Republicans in Congress - have pursued economic and social policies that have done real harm to mainstream America. The best way to bring an end to the Bush era is to elect a Democrat as President and to support Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

McCain / Bush Press Conference

From the DNC's Website:

George Bush endorsed John McCain this afternoon at a press conference at the White House. Since the event was held in the middle of the afternoon we fear that some New Jerseyans may miss George Bush assurances that John McCain would continue the Bush Administrations failed economic and foreign policies. As a public service we've posted a video of the press conference for voters to see.

"And he's goin (sic) to be the president"
-George W. Bush

That's what President Bush declared as John McCain accepted his endorsement in Washington.

You can watch the whole video here

John McCain said during the press conference, "I intend to have as much possible campaigning events together ... I look forward to the chance to bring OUR message to America"

That sums up the stakes in this years election, do you want to continue the Bush presidency through his surrogate John McCain, or do we need to have higher aspirations as a nation. When John McCain was asked what he thought about the voters’ clear desire for Change, he let President Bush answer for him and said he didn’t have anything to add.

We need your help to bring about the change in this country that President Bush, Dick Cheney and John McCain are afraid of.

McCain let slip the real reason he's decided to abandon his former maverick self and fall in line with the Bush administration and its benefactors like huge oil companies, Halliburton and the rest of the failed Republican establishment in Washington; "I'll be pleased to have him (George W Bush) with me both from raising money and the much needed finances for the campaign"

That’s why we need your help today; please take the time to contribute to help us end the Bush administration on January 20th, 2009, not January 20th, 2013!

Any amount will help us fulfill this country’s desire for a new direction in the White House.

In addition to the presidential race, New Jersey is going to play a key role in the make up of the next congress. We have two top targets in the state with John Adler and Linda Stender both running for open Republican congressional seats. With your help we can fund a strong coordinated statewide campaign to deliver the state to the Democratic Presidential nominee and increase New Jersey’s Democratic congressional delegation from 7 out of 13 to 9 out of 13.

Please contribute

We know these campaigns are going to be won by going door to door, so if you haven’t already signed up to be a neighborhood leader please do so now.

Please forward this to friends who might not have been able to see President Bush’s endorsement of John McCain.

And it's not too late to take part in the Democratic National Convention! Click here to find out how to become a delegate.

A Turning Point Budget From Governor Jon S. Corzine

The budget proposed by Governor Corzine is the most fiscally responsible budget presented in years, but it is very painful. From Day One, the Governor came in to office with the intention of getting the State on the right fiscal track.

The budget represents a "turning point" in the fiscal management of our State, a turning point away from the patterns of overspending and tortured borrowing that burden the taxpayers, and a turning point toward spending restraint and spending cuts that genuinely address our financial emergency.

In fact, his proposal asks for the second-largest cut in spending year-to-year of any budget in New Jersey history…and for only the fourth time since 1951, the budget will be reduced compared to the budget signed the previous year.

For the second year running, the Governor’s budget contains no new taxes of any kind…while it again increases net property tax relief. Of course, “flat funding” doesn’t mean no cuts, “flat funding” means cutting $2.2 billion just to keep at last year’s level.

In light of the ongoing economic downturn, revenue estimates aren’t strong enough to support even last year’s expenditures. As a result, the Governor cut another $500 million.

To achieve the spending cuts this budget delivers, the Corzine Administration began by prioritizing and protecting the core responsibilities of government, such as: educating our children, providing for public safety, caring for the most vulnerable, and with New Jersey’s families under financial pressure… sustaining middle-class property tax relief.

Spending is down in every department of the Executive Branch; this is the first time this has ever occurred. In total, there are over $350 million in savings directly attributable to a smaller State government.

With this budget the Corzine Administration will have eliminated 5,000 total government jobs at a minimum.

The financial restructuring the Governor put forward had four elements because it will take more than spending cuts to cure the broken finances of our State. First, he is getting state spending under control. Second, he is making sure that future spending matches revenue. Third, he will stop out-of-control borrowing. And fourth, he will reduce our crushing debt load and fund infrastructure investments.

In terms of debt reduction and long-term fiscal reform, it is not enough to just reject the toll road proposal. Those who don’t like that alternative, should put forward another viable approach to take debt off the books and fund transportation improvements.

Governor Corzine has lived up to his commitment to be accountable and honest in his actions, and the way he approaches problems. The state has spent too much money and we carry far too much debt. These twin problems are a threat to the state's financial health and to our future well being.

Governor Corzine’s budget and his financial restructuring plan are part of a significant undertaking to fix our financial problems for this year and for the years to come.

Delegate Selection Process

As you already know, the February 5th Primary was a resounding success for the Democratic Party. We had record turnout here in New Jersey and our early estimates are that we have hundreds of thousands of newly registered Democrats. There's still a chance for you to go to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver as a delegate or alternate.

The February 5th primary elected 70 delegates and 12 alternates in 20 Delegate Districts. There are still an additional 45 at-large delegate and alternate spots to be filled. If you're interested in becoming a delegate or alternate, download the "Statement of Candidacy" form here and fax it to us or fill out the on-line version here.

Gov. Corzine Signs Two Bills to Help Working Families

Gov. Corzine last week signed two bills designed to help New Jersey’s working families. The first bill will expand the New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to nearly 300,000 additional families ensuring that those who need our help the most will receive it. The second bill permits free tax preparation centers (VITA sites) to offer Alternative Refund Anticipation Loans (A-RALs) to low income New Jersey filers without high fees or interest charges. The new guidelines will crackdown on predatory lending practices and help protect New Jersey taxpayers from those that would take advantage of them when they are in need.

Congress Passes Economic Stimulus Bill

The House and Senate moved swiftly to pass an economic stimulus package this month with Senators Lautenberg and Menendez both voting for the measure along with our seven Democratic Members of Congress. The bill will give rebates to more than 130 million households this spring and help the economy now when it needs it most.

Our Democratic Congress worked to get this bill through and welcomed the support and input from across the aisle. The leadership in the House and Senate have shown that they don’t want partisan bickering and are more than willing to work with their Republican colleagues to fix the problems that face our nation.

Some highlights:

Provide rebates to 3.8 million New Jerseyans
Provide a total of $3.2 billion in rebates to New Jerseyans
Provide rebates to more than a million New Jersey seniors
Provide rebates to 250,000 disabled veterans across the country

Wow

The most important number from last night:
1,108,044...and counting

That’s how many New Jerseyans, who care about changing our country and state for the better, came out to vote in our primary. This is just the first step to what is going to be a great year for Democrats in New Jersey and across the country. Throughout the day yesterday our office was deluged with calls from people trying to find out if they were allowed to vote or where there polling place was. NJDSC staffers were even logging on to Google Maps to give people directions to their polling places.

We heard so many great stories yesterday about the excitement at polling places around the state, whether it was a family all voting for the first time, Republicans who switched the party affiliation to vote for a Democratic candidate or how bored the Republican poll workers were since there were two times as many Democrats voting yesterday. Now we want to hear your story or observation about yesterday. Click here to give us your best story or observation from yesterday. We will post the best ones on our website.

So Now What?

It is obvious that the Democratic nomination for President won’t be sealed for a while, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start working on stopping what would essentially be President Bush’s 3rd term from happening.

The first thing to do is pledge that you will support the eventual Democratic nominee for president and help us end 8 years of Bush Republicanism in Washington.

Next, are there people you know who are unaffiliated voters who voted for the first time yesterday? Share this email with them and have them take the pledge. The NJDSC will be working overtime from now until November 4th to make sure people who took part in the excitement yesterday stay involved the next 9 months, and we need your help. Become a neighborhood leader, or if you already are one, recruit someone else to help you out.

Never before has New Jersey had the opportunity to play such a large role in a Federal election, in addition to the presidential race, New Jersey will have 2-4 nationally targeted Congressional races where we have a chance to turn Bush Republican seats into New Jersey Democratic seats. But in order to wage a strong campaign for all our Democratic candidates in this state every dollar we get from supporters across the state can help make the difference in November . Any amount will go a long way to helping us regain control of Washington.

Vote Today

Please make sure you take the time to get out and VOTE today. Don't miss this historic, and unprecedented for New Jersey, opportunity to take part in the selection of our presidential nominee. To find your polling location click here.

No matter who you're voting for today, starting tomorrow we will all be working together for one common goal – putting a Democrat in the White House and ending the gross negligence of this Republican administration.

Commit now to do your part for our eventual nominee by clicking here. If you have any questions about today's primary call us at 609-392-3367

They Just Don't Get It

Once again, Republicans in Washington have sided with President Bush. Even as millions of middle class families struggle to make ends meet amid America’s worsening economic slump, three New Jersey Republican Congressmen (Scott Garrett, Rodney Frelinghuysen, Jim Saxton) continued to help George Bush block the bipartisan effort to provide quality, affordable health care for 10 million American children.

Read More Here

The only way we can end this cycle of Republican obstructionism and incompetence is to elect a Democratic President and a stronger Democratic Majority in Congress. For the first time in recent history you are going to have a chance to play a big roll in the process. New Jersey’s Presidential Primary is less than 2 weeks away on February 5th. The excitement for the race has been obvious with recent trips to the state from Presidential Contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. If you need to find your polling location click here.

In addition the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has designated two House races in New Jersey top targets of their Red to Blue program. State Senator John Adler and Assemblywoman Linda Stender are running to fill two open seats currently held by Republicans. Never before has New Jersey had the opportunity to play such a large role in a Federal election. And with the re-election of Senator Frank Lautenberg we can be certain that we have one of the strongest fighters in Washington for what’s important to New Jerseyans.

Cryan: 'Corzine Gave Us the Truth and He Gave Us A Plan'

Democratic Party Chairman Joe Cryan issued the following statement on Tuesday in response to Governor Corzine's State of the State Address:

"The Governor today gave all of us in New Jersey a straightforward and sobering diagnosis of a fiscal crisis that has been years in the making and that, if left to itself, could choke off our financial well being and deny us future opportunities.

Jersey's proud moment

From the Star Ledger:

New Jersey once was justifiably proud of its reputation as a forward-looking state, for its efforts to provide a quality education for all children, no matter where they lived, for encouraging construction of affordable housing throughout the state, for its excellent judiciary. Lately, though, New Jersey more often than not has signified corruption and crime.

Last week, New Jersey regained its place among progressive states when it abolished the death penalty.

It took both Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate and the Assembly to make the decision, which was heart-wrenching for many. But it was the right one. Gov. Jon Corzine signs the bill today.

Men who had voted in 1982 to reintroduce the death penalty -- such as Senate President Richard Codey -- and officials -- such as Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio -- who prosecute murderers said the time had come to recognize that the death penalty was not good public policy. Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts put it best: "It is simply not for us to decide who should live and who should die."

In an era of polarizing, partisan politics, the men and women of New Jersey's Legislature rose above the mire to do the right thing.

Governor Corzine Stands Tall: On Policy & Principle

Bringing more focus to his objective of restructuring state finances and a renewed emphasis on the principles of financial reform, Governor Jon Corzine outlined his plan to reduce state debt by 50 percent and to restore fiscal responsibility. The Governor stood tall, displaying political courage and fortitude.

As Tom Moran of the Star Ledger wrote: "...the governor was on his game, relaxed and articulate. He's finally made the big decisions on how to fix the state's finances, and he seemed to be at peace. When he said he is willing to fight to the death to get it done, he sounded like he meant it."

Read Moran's column Here

The Governor, a former Chairman of Goldman Sachs, the prestigious Wall Street investment firm, stressed the importance of substantially reducing state debt. His plan, when finished, will be devoted almost entirely to debt reduction.

As the Bergen Record reported: "Corzine said his plan would slash $16 billion off the state's $32 billion in bonded debt, a burden that averages out to $3,700 for every resident. He said the state's fiscal outlook is even bleaker because of an additional $75 billion dollars from under-funded pension payments and medical benefits for retired state workers.

"We will get one chance at serious financial restructuring, and it has to be done right," he said."

Underscoring his commitment to fiscal reform - as well as his political courage - the Governor said the state's financial future is more important than his personal political future.

As Gannett reported: "It's time for we elected officials to stop being afraid and cautious and do something bold to right the ship," Corzine said. He later added: "I'm willing to lose my job if that's necessary to set our fiscal house in order."

"Along with paying down debt, Corzine said, his plan will provide permanent funding for transportation needs and will include new restrictions on state borrowing."

The Governor said that in addition to cleaning-up the financial mess of the past, he wants to put preventive reforms in place.

As the Star Ledger reported: "Calling for "transformational change" in the state's finances, Gov. Jon Corzine said yesterday his plan to raise tolls and pay down state debt will include new limits on future borrowing so New Jersey does not repeat "the mistakes of the past."

The "most important structural reform" he will propose, Corzine said, will "create greater public control over future debt as a means of protecting taxpayers from the mistakes of the past."

The Governor also spoke to the need for leadership on the state's future.

As he said: "The point is the citizens of New Jersey have every right to demand, that we public officials, put our fiscal house in order so we are partners in their success, not a burden to their future. To that end, I hope you will be prepared to join me, with an open mind and a seriousness of purpose that will enable us to take on, and overcome, these challenges. If we do, there is no question, New Jersey’s best days lie ahead."

Cryan Condemns Cardinale's Political Comments

Trenton - Joseph Cryan, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, issued the following statement today condemning the divisive political comments by Senator Cardinale and dismissing Cardinale's post-election explanations as empty excuses:

"Senator Cardinale's campaign tactics were disgraceful and divisive. Inflammatory rhetoric that demonizes any ethnic, racial or religious community should not be part of any political dialogue. There are no good excuses for smear tactics and no good reasons for hateful language. He should put an end to this and see that it isn't repeated."

Governor Corzine on SCHIP

Governor Jon Corzine continued his compassionate leadership on the issue of children's health insurance, and this week he took to the national stage to challenge President Bush. Governor Corzine and New Jersey Democrats have not only implemented the federal SCHIP program for children's health insurance, they have expanded it through our own Family Care program.

George Bush plans to veto the reauthorization of the program. Governor Corzine is determined to protect it. On Sunday, Governor Corzine went on national TV to take on George Bush's Health and Human Services Commissioner Leavitt. Of course, Jon Corzine prevailed.

Governor Corzine Announces New Jersey Will Sue Bush Administration Over SCHIP

TRENTON - Governor Jon S. Corzine today filed a lawsuit on behalf of the people of the state of New Jersey challenging the letter issued by the Bush Administration limiting eligibility for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The lawsuit accuses the Bush Administration of circumventing the public rule-making process by fundamentally and arbitrarily changing the program via letter, which would have the effect of denying health insurance coverage for over 10,000 New Jersey children.

SCHIP Health Insurance Plan Passes Congress

The SCHIP children’s health insurance plan reauthorization passed Congress on September 25 and is heading to the Senate for consideration. Not surprisingly, Republicans want to deny health insurance from the neediest Americans, and 3 of our own "moderate" New Jersey Republican Congressmen, Jim Saxton, Scott Garrett, and Rodney Frelinghuysen, felt the need to vote against providing health care to 4 million low-income American children. President Bush is threatening to use his veto when this bill passes, but Governor Corzine and the Democratic Party are leading the fight to make sure our children remain safe and healthy.

Senator John Adler to Challenge Saxton

State Senator John Adler announced last week that he will be running for Congress next year against Jim Saxton in New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional district. The change couldn’t come soon enough, as Saxton again showed his lock step support of the Bush administration by voting AGAINST expansion of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). John Adler will be a fighter for New Jersey’s values in Washington, not another Bush Republican.

College Dems Praise Congress for School Cost Reduction

From the DNC's Website:

Washington, DC - Today the Democratic Congress sent landmark legislation to the President that reduces college costs for millions of young people.

College Democrats of America issued the following statement praising Congressional Democrats and highlighting the bill's benefits for minority students.

"Democrats are clearly delivering on their promise to expand opportunity and increase college affordability by passing this landmark legislation.

For all young people, and especially minority groups, college is the key to improving their future. College graduates are more likely to earn higher wages and to have access to health care and overall career stability.

"This legislation goes far in helping young people who may be the first in their family to attend college by increasing Pell Grants which benefit low income students and their families. Democrats believe that all Americans who want to attend college should have this opportunity. By making college more affordable we are ensuring that future generations are equipped with the tools they need to compete in a global and increasingly diverse economy.

"We call on President Bush to follow Democrats' lead, and urge him to show his support for our country's young people by signing this critical legislation."

Pascrell Represents NJ on Homeland Security

New Jersey once again has a representative on a Congressional Homeland Security Committee after Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. was appointed Wednesday to fill a vacancy.

Pascrell is a former leader on the committee but had to give up his seat when he was assigned to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. His deep knowledge on Homeland Security issues, as they affect the region and the country, convinced Speaker Pelosi to grant him a waiver to serve on both committees.

"I actually never felt like I've left the committee," Pascrell said. "Not a day has gone by when I haven't considered New Jersey's homeland security interests."

Gov. Corzine Challenges Bush on Children's Health Insurance Policy

TRENTON – Governor Jon S. Corzine today sent a letter to President Bush vowing to continue to enroll New Jersey children in the popular State Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), FamilyCare, despite recent federal efforts to limit such enrollments. Corzine also said in his letter that he was prepared, if necessary, to pursue legal action to further the goal of protecting our most vulnerable children.
The text of the letter follows:

13th Annual State Conference

This past weekend the Democratic State Party held its 13th Annual New Jersey Democratic State Conference in Atlantic City. With a general theme of empowerment and inclusion, the conference ensured that the Democratic Party plans to uphold their commitment to building on the record of success by Democrats in New Jersey.

The conference was hugely successful and we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the generosity of all the sponsors and to the panelists who gave us their time and expertise. There were many highlights over the three days of the conference, one of which included the 50-plus college students who participated in the New Generation Training Program. Chairman Joe Cryan was one of the many elected officials who spoke to this group, providing encouragement and insight on the rewards of being a public servant.

Another highlight was having Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton speak to the crowd of 1,000 attendees. Her presence reminded us all of the important role New Jersey has in the Presidential Primary.

Yet the greatest part of this year's conference was the amount of resources that were provided. There were many workshops and training sessions provided that contained practical and helpful information on up-to-date political strategies for all of the attendees. The Democratic State Committee serves as a resource for all Democrats. Feel free to contact the office for future events and trainings.

Sen. Hillary Clinton to Speak at DSC Conference

Hillary Clinton will attend the New Jersey Democratic Party's Annual Conference in Atlantic City on Friday, September 7th, joining with Democrats from throughout the state in the post-Labor Day event that signals the acceleration of the 2007 campaign cycle, Governor Jon Corzine and Joe Cryan, the chairman of the Democratic State Committee announced on Wednesday.

Governor Corzine and Senator Clinton will address the conference at the Friday luncheon along with Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, Congressman Frank Pallone and Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman.

"New Jersey will play a key role in the political campaigns that will help change the direction of the country and Garden State Democrats will be important participants," said State Chairman Joe Cryan. "The earlier primary in New Jersey and the strength of the party gives us a more prominent voice in the selection process."

NJ Senators Fighting for US

WASHINGTON – New Jersey Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) led a strong and successful effort to protect the health of New Jersey children that culminated in tonight’s Senate passage of the Children’s Health Insurance Program reauthorization bill by a seemingly veto-proof 68-31 vote. The legislation includes exemptions to continue strong federal support for New Jersey’s FamilyCare program – exemptions that Menendez and Lautenberg defended repeatedly from amendments targeting New Jersey on the Senate floor.

With over 100 volunteers throughout the state, the Democratic National Committee in partnership with the New Jersey State Democratic Party organized a volunteer canvass in over 12 counties and 18 municipalities and towns. The National Day of Action occurred in all 50 states but was unique in New Jersey for we took this national canvass day as an opportunity to educate voters about the state’s vote by mail program. Democrats Doing Right by Workers

In May, Democrats in Washington delivered on their promise to raise the minimum wage for millions of American workers. The first installment of that raise goes into effect today, July 24, 2007. Since the last increase in the minimum wage in 1997, prices for basic needs, from food to gasoline to child care have skyrocketed. By fighting for and passing this minimum wage increase, Democrats have helped millions of Americans immediately earn an extra $1,500 per year and eventually an additional $4,400 per year when the full $2.10 increase is realized.

From Tom Moran, The Star Ledger - Who could veto care for kids? One Guess.

At some point, you have to wonder if President Bush has simply lost his bearings.

He is about as popular these days as a skin rash. And he keeps doing things to make it worse.

This week, his target was the nearly 9 million American kids who lack basic health insurance. Most of them are the children of the working poor, or near-poor -- the janitors and cashiers and truck drivers who keep this country humming.

Property Tax Relief For Senior Citizens

As a result of the leadership and determination of Governor Corzine and Democrats in the Legislature, the State of New Jersey implemented the largest and most substantial property tax relief program in the state's history. One component of the plan is the Senior Tax Freeze, which allows seniors to effectively freeze their property tax bills. Because so many seniors live on fixed incomes, holding down increases in their local taxes is significant.

The checks are now on their way to senior citizens and the disabled.

In addition to the freeze, seniors will also qualify for Homestead Rebates.

Democrats have also enacted reforms designed to get at the root causes of the property tax burden. These reforms will have a long term effect. And we aren't done. Democrats are committed to reducing tax bills and reforming the system.

Corzine Administration on Global Warming

TRENTON – Following a briefing by the Union of Concerned Scientists regarding the effects of global warming on New Jersey and the northeastern United States, Governor Jon S. Corzine issued the following statement.

"Overwhelming evidence has proved that global warming poses a serious threat and if we as a people continue on a course of inaction the planet will continue to warm, water levels will continue to rise and Atlantic City and our coastal communities will drown. In absence of leadership on the federal level, the fight to reduce greenhouse gases has now fallen upon the states. While it’s important for states to lead on initiatives like overall green house gas reduction, the real difference in this fight will be made through small contributions by individuals. Citizens must know that they can make a tremendous difference by simply driving less, using mass transit and switching to energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs."

Governor Jon Corzine's Core Principles on Asset Monetization

"In countless ways, New Jersey is the best state in America. But we need to invest in our future if we’re going to stay on top. As a result of decisions made across administrations and across party lines over the past 20 years, New Jersey has amassed over $30 billion in debt and staggering unfunded pension and healthcare liabilities.

"I have a vision for a brighter New Jersey, but today we cannot afford the investments to make that vision a reality. I fundamentally believe we need new resources and renewed political courage to make those investments.

"My administration has been developing a new vehicle to achieve that goal.

"Any asset monetization proposal put forth by my administration will adhere to the following core principles:

1. New Jersey’s roadways will not be sold; and they will not be leased to a for-profit or foreign operator.

2. Allowable uses of proceeds (reducing State debt and capital investments) will be identified upfront and subject to public and/or legislative approval with safeguards against diversions for other uses.

3. New Jersey citizens will retain ownership and the benefits from both initial proceeds and ongoing operations.

4. Safety, maintenance and operating standards will be provided at current or improved levels.

5. Sufficient funding to meet the long-term capital needs required to improve our roadways and reduce congestion will be provided.

6. Terms and conditions of employment for current employees and contractors will remain unchanged with prevailing wage and competitive contracting procedures retained.

7. Toll schedules will be open, predictable and available to the public.

8. There will be a substantial, open and public discussion in advance of any transaction. I will hold 21 town hall meetings in 21 counties.

Governor Jon S. Corzine

A Road the Public Will Own

Governor Corzine with clear and decisive language put to rest any unfounded speculation that the State of New Jersey will sell or lease any of the toll roads. Not true.

The Governor also issued a list of core principles that will keep the roadways in the ownership and control of the people of New Jersey, will maintain the high standards of police security and highway maintenance. He couldn't be more clear or more decisive.

Governor Corzine Signs State Budget

Governor Corzine on Wednesday signed a state budget for the coming year that makes history by devoting an unprecedented, historic amount of property tax relief to homeowners and renters throughout the state. And he did it without any tax increases.

More than 50 percent of the budget - $16.8 billion - is dedicated to direct or indirect property tax relief, including a full $2 billion for direct rebates.

For the residents of New Jersey, this is a great budget.

"This is a sound and solid budget that affirms the legislature’s and my commitment to providing substantial property tax relief in the context of sound fiscal principals.

"It spends only what we can pay for…

"…carves out new efficiencies and savings…

"…eliminates the tricks and gimmicks of budgets past…

"…upholds our commitments to the most vulnerable in our state and society…

"…AND was proposed, debated, and passed both on time and with unprecedented transparency."

Governor Jon S. Corzine

$16.8 Billion In Property Tax Relief
$2 Billion in Rebates

Following through on a determined commitment to deliver substantial property tax relief to the residents of New Jersey, the new state budget will provide $16.8 billion in direct and indirect property tax relief, including $2 billion in rebates to homeowners and renters.

This is an historic amount of tax relief and a landmark commitment to tax reform. And Democrats aren't done. We will follow through on long-term reforms. The rebates that will be going out soon is just one step in the process.

In wake of Bush stem cell veto, Jersey lawmakers step up

Once again, the divide between the Republican agenda of George Bush and the priorities of New Jersey Democrats is shown to be wide when it comes to stem cell research. The narrow ideology of Bush Republicans would hinder the pursuit of science and medicine in a way that, over time, could provide medical treatment that could alleviate suffering and maybe find cures for an unknown number of illnesses. Governor Corzine, Senate President Codey and Assemblyman Cohen have provided the right leadership for the right reasons on stem cell research. New Jersey will move forward on this - even if George Bush is left behind.

2007 Governor's Gala a Huge Success!

The Democratic State Committee's fundraising Gala honoring Governor Jon Corzine with special guest President Bill Clinton last Friday was an enormous success in all ways. We attracted more than 700 people to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and generated $2.1 million in support for the Democratic Party.

The crowd was enthusiastic, the ambiance was both festive and relaxed, the indoor-outdoor setting offered an attractive view from an attractive facility, and everyone had a real good time.

President Clinton, Governor Corzine and Newark Mayor Cory Booker shared their words, their ideas and their optimism about Democrats in New Jersey and throughout the country.

The Democratic Party will use the resources and the strength of spirit that was so evident at the Gala to continue to build the Party for this year and the years ahead.

We'll be posting more videos and photos from the event right here, so check back often!

Welcome Back Governor Corzine!

Democrats join with all the residents of New Jersey in welcoming Governor Jon Corzine back, grateful for his rapid recovery from injuries sustained in the highway accident less than one month ago. As the Governor has said, the support of his family and the expressions of concern and good will from so many people in New Jersey and beyond have been important factors in a recovery that has outpaced medical expectations. Knowing the Governor, we shouldn't be surprised.

The Democratic State Committee's website alone received and forwarded approximately 4,000 get well messages for the Governor.

Jon Corzine is a hard-working and determined leader with a history of meeting tough challenges and overcoming adversity. He is also a gracious and selfless man who recognizes and values the good work of others. He has repeatedly praised the heroic efforts of the State Troopers who ignored danger to themselves in responding to the accident and the doctors and staff at Cooper Hospital who provided emergency care and medical treatment. As awful as the circumstances, it brought out the best in so many, including Senate President and, from the day of the accident until now, Acting Governor Richard Codey.

Governor Corzine and the people of New Jersey are fortunate to have Dick Codey to step up with his steady and experienced hand at a time when he is needed. This isn't the first time. Dick Codey suddenly assumed the job of Governor for more than a year following the resignation of former Governor McGreevey. Dick Codey distinguished himself then and he has now done it again. We are all grateful and appreciative of another job well done by Dick when it was needed most.

Along with the continued road to full recovery for Governor Corzine, we will all work together - perhaps with a renewed sense of determination - to move New Jersey forward.

NJ Democrats Support Our Troops

As Democrats in Congress act to set a reasonable and responsible timetable for bringing an end to George Bush's mismanagement of the war in Iraq, New Jersey's congressional delegation took sides with a clear partisan distinction: the Republicans sided with George Bush and the Democrats sided with the will of the American people.

All seven Democrats voted for the bill that supports our troops and sets a timeline to bring them home while all six Republicans sided with Bush and opposed the measure. The House of Representatives approved the plan with a vote of 218 to 208 on Wednesday. The United States Senate is expected to do the same, with the support of New Jersey's two senators.

The timing of congressional action has a disturbing irony; Monday marks the fourth anniversary of Bush's infamously-wrong pronouncement of "Mission Accomplished."

The American people and the courageous men and women in the armed forces are paying a heavy price in lives lost or wounded, in money, in security and in damaged prestige. The conflict has turned into a civil war and our troops should not be in the middle.

Democrats from New Jersey did the right thing in Congress, unfortunately, the Republicans did not.

Ocean County Special Elections

Democrat Carla Kearney, from South Toms River, was once again elected to serve on borough council. Councilwomen Kearney and the Ocean County Democrats were able to pull their voters to the polls and win an important seat. Carla’s commitment to reaching out to every voter in South Toms River paid off on Election Day when she was able to win with a vote margin of over 80 votes. The Ocean County Democrats, volunteers from Democracy for America, the Democrat State Committee and young Democrats worked hard to ensure this victory.

Unfortunately, even with the hard work and dedication of the Lavallette democrats, Joe Ardito was unable to secure the Mayors seat again. Despite registration numbers of 181 Democrats and 964 Republicans Councilman Ardito was able to get over 500 votes in his favor. This special election was exactly that, "special." There was an almost 65% voter turnout in a March Election, and it was an awesome fight to the finish line. Joe Ardito, his wife Sara Ardito, and the Lavallette Democrats have easily earned the respect of local, county, and statewide democrats because they chose to stand up to the Lavallette Republican machine that has been unchallenged for so many years. By challenging the republicans, the Lavallette and Ocean County democrats have set a precedent for the future; no race will be easy for the Republicans.

We thank everyone for their hard work and time. There is another special election that is to be held on May 1 in Morris Township. If you would like to help secure another democratic victory please call the Democratic State Committee 609-392-3367.

Rush Holt: "Alberto Gonzales Should Resign"

From bluejersey.com:

Congressman Rush Holt is calling for Attorney General Gonzales to step down. Hot off the tubes:

"Alberto Gonzales should resign. The politically motivated firing of eight U.S. Attorneys reveals that Attorney General Gonzales still sees his role as President Bush's personal lawyer, not our nation's top law enforcement official. He has enabled Members of Congress and political appointees in their inappropriate attempts to influence the actions of U.S. Attorneys and, failing that, to have them replaced. The nation deserves better.

"Attorney General Gonzales repeatedly compared himself to a corporate CEO. He and the White House have clearly botched their attempt at a hostile takeover of the independent judiciary, and he should take responsibility for that."

Cryan: Poll's 'Despite-It-All' Findings For The Governor Show Political Strength & Personal Appeal

Trenton - Democratic Party Chairman Joe Cryan said on Wednesday that the poll just released by Fairleigh Dickinson University's 'PublicMind Polling' documents the public's trust and respect in Governor Corzine's leadership despite - or maybe because of - the Governor's willingness to take on the big challenges and to make the tough decisions.

"The Governor isn't intimidated by the big issues and he isn't afraid to make difficult decisions. The 'despite-it-all' findings of this poll reflects a high level of trust and respect that overcomes the built-in political risks of all the challenges he has confronted. Polling numbers go up and down and this Governor certainly doesn't govern with an eye on short-term opinion surveys, but he is gaining an enduring appeal that is good for him, good for Democrats and good for New Jersey."

The political determination by Governor Corzine and Democrats in the State Legislature has produced an unprecedented plan for property tax relief and reform. The relief is substantial and the reforms are real. Close to $2.3 billion will be dedicated to ongoing tax relief for 95 percent of the households in the state - cutting their tax bills as much as 20 percent. Rebates for renters will double.

The State Senate and General Assembly just approved the plan - even winning over a majority of Republicans who don't want to be on the wrong side of the plan. The Governor is now giving it a full legal review to make sure it will do the job. In the meantime you can use the Tax Relief Calculator above to estimate how much you will save. The average savings are categorized by county, municipality and income.

The Presidential Primary: Moving On Up In New Jersey

Cryan Endorses Plan To Schedule The Presidential Primary To The First Week In February

The Legislature is acting on a plan by Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts and Senate President Dick Codey to put the Presidential primary into the early wave.

"This is the right move for the right reasons because it will make New Jersey more of a player in Presidential politics," said Chairman Cryan. "We've long funded presidential candidates, we should have a more prominent voice in the selection process and more of an early influence on the national political agenda.

"We've led the way on national political trends, we should also be in the forefront on the primary calendar. The voters of New Jersey know good candidates when they see them and they know the best policies when they hear them. Our primary voters make good sense and they make good decisions. I believe the rest of the Nation will benefit by hearing from us earlier in the campaign."

What a Week!

What a week! What a month! What a year for Governor Corzine, the Democratic Legislature and the Democratic Party in New Jersey!

The past week was an astounding culmination of success for the Governor and governing Democrats. First, there was the labor agreement the Governor reached with state worker unions that includes annual raises with shared contributions for health care and long-range reforms to pensions.

This is the first time the state and the public employee unions have reached such an agreement - and it was accomplished months ahead of schedule.

Then the Governor went before the Legislature and the people of New Jersey to present a budget plan that includes the largest property tax relief plan in state history - without raising taxes or fees.

The budget won editorial praise

It won analytical praise from columnists;
Tom Moran of the Star Ledger

James Ahearn of The Record

While he may have a partisan eye, the chairman of the Democratic Party, Joe Cryan, captured the Democratic perspective:

Governor Corzine has earned respect and even admiration for presenting a plan that is smart in addressing immediate needs, responsible in its discipline and bluntly honest in its assessment of future financial problems.

Despite the widespread acclaim, the Governor kept his stride, refusing to engage in self congratulation.

Even with all these dramatic accomplishments, the Democratic Legislature was moving forward on other key issues. The full Senate today overwhelmingly approved four bills that are part of a comprehensive ethics reform package sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senator Ellen Karcher. The measures, which now head to the Assembly for approval, are aimed at restoring the public's confidence in government and creating greater transparency and efficiency.

And, the General Assembly today voted 57-16-2 to pass legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Nellie Pou and Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin that would crack down on abusive practices - like pension boosting, tacking, and padding - that undermine the financial integrity of the state's benefits system for public employees.

While these accomplishments occurred in the past week, they are the culmination of hard work and dedication over the past months by the Governor, the Democratic Legislature and Democrats throughout the state. And we are far from done.

Civil Unions

New Jersey became the third state with civil unions for gay couples today as a law passed last year under pressure from the state Supreme Court takes effect.

At least a few hundred of the state's estimated 20,000 gay couples - those who have civil unions or marriages from other states or nations that allow them - automatically became part of civil unions in this state at 12:01 a.m. today, when the law took effect.

Democrats Win in Flemington

From the Star Ledger:

Democrat Mark Legato defeated Republican Julie Luster in Flemington's special council election, 343 to 313 votes. Legato held a one-vote margin in November, but a judge threw out that result because of questions about mishandled ballots. With about a third of Flemington voters turning out today, Legato carried two of the borough's three election districts and also lead among absentee votes.

"I had a lot of great people working for me," Legato said.

Those great people included Mary Campbell and Colleen Montgomery from our team here at the State Party, as well as a dedicated group of volunteers from the Princeton University Democrats. Great work, everyone!

June Fischer Elected to DNC Executive Committee

New Jersey's own June S. Fischer was recently elected to the Democratic National Committee's Executive Committee to represent the Eastern Region. Fischer has served six, four-year terms as a New Jersey representative to the DNC.

During her tenure with the DNC, she served as chair of the Eastern Region. Fisher served as an aide to then-Senator Jon Corzine and currently works for Senator Bob Menendez. She also serves as chair of Union County’s election board.

Ready to Run Campaign Training

Each year the Democratic State Committee works with individuals interested in running for office around the state. One of the best programs is the Center for American Women and Politics' Ready to Run campaign training.

We strongly encourage any Democratic women around the state who have an interest in running for office now, or in the future to participate in this program. Even if your just curious and want to learn what it might be like to run for town council, mayor, State Assembly or Senate, you should participate. This year they are running special programs for African American, Latina and Asian women who want to run for office.

Courier Post Pushes R's to join Dems in Secure Elections

Congressman Rush Holt's bill to require Voter Verified Paper Trails (VVPT's) in all electronic voting machines enjoys bi-partisan support, with 150 legislators co-sponsoring his bill. The Courier Post is urging two South Jersey Republican Congressmen, Saxton and LoBiondo, to do the same.

VVPT's ensure that when you are casting your vote, a paper record is stored in the machine and showed to you before you exit the polling booth. This measure is incredibly important if we are to prevent voter fraud, as well as faulty machines determining the outcome of an important election.

Cryan On Property Tax Relief and Reform

"This is an important milestone on the long hard road to tax relief that is substantial and reforms that go to the root causes of the property tax crisis. We were not afraid to take on an issue that has defied solution and scared away serious remedies for far too long."

News Conference of the Week

Some "winning comments" from yesterday's news conference:

"Make the relief available to everyone in a non-discriminatory basis," Assemblyman Merkt.

"I guarantee you someone is going to file a lawsuit" (against the relief plan) - Assemblyman Merkt.

"Can't look at their height, can't look at income" - Assemblyman Merkt.

"Many members swallowed hard and held their noses" in voting for the tax relief plan that will help close to two million households. - Assemblyman DeCroce

"Do the Democrats just want to throw rocks, or fix the problem?" - Merkt

"This was put out three months ago maybe there should be a brain in your caucus, possibly, who would see what they were proposing" - a question to the Repubs from the press corps.

"If you are saying this (income standards) is unfair, why do you want to write it into the constitution?" - a question from the press corps.

"We weren't in charge," GOP response when asked why they didn't challenge the constitutionality of the income-based rebate program in place for the past three years.

In the category of 'he knows not the truth of his words,' this from Assemblyman Merkt: "This (the reform plan) is the best thing since the Virgin Birth."

"I don't give a damn if you are talking to me or not." Guess Who? (this one has to be heard to be fully appreciated - click play below to hear it)

Cryan On Property Tax Reform

Democrats in the Legislature working in concert with Governor Corzine have advanced the most significant plan to reduce property taxes and make lasting reforms to the tax system that the residents have ever seen. This plan is now advancing through the legislative process.

The $2 billion plan will provide direct credits to the property tax bills of 1.8 million homeowners, reducing their property taxes by as much as 20 percent. The average savings for those making $100,000 or less will be $1,050. Funding to reimburse renters will double.

At the same time, a cap of 4 percent in growth will be established for local governments. This is an effective tool for sustaining property tax savings in the years ahead.

At the insistence of Governor Corzine, the reform effort includes the establishment of a State Comptroller to monitor spending by govern
